When you think of rap music you usually think of cities like Atlanta, New York, Houston, Los Angeles. After all some of the biggest names in the rap industry have been out of those cities with artists such as Notorious B.I.G, Tupac Shakur, Outkast, Chamillionare. It doesn’t really cross your mind when you think Brownsville being a center for rap music, you think more of artists trying to make a name of themselves in Tejano, Norteño, and Banda. One rap artist from Brownsville is trying to change all that.
Meet Luis “C-Styles” Robles, a 30 year old rapper who has worked hard and is now reaping the benefits of those long nights put in the studio. Tomorrow he will be performing alongside Wiz Khalifa at the Schlibberthan Water Park in South Padre Island. This isn’t the first time he has collaborated with high profile names, he has performed with Kirko Bangz, Lil Flip, Ludacris, T-Pain, Future to name a few. Originally born in Guadalajara, Mexico he spent most of his life growing up in the streets in Chicago. It was in the Windy City that Luis started falling in love with rap music. “One time during a talent show a friend of mine wrote a song but he was super nervous to sing it himself, so he asked me to sing with him and he wrote a lines for me and even though we bombed, it gave me something to think about ” Luis explains his first encounter singing on the stage and how it helped him decide that was something he wanted to pursue.
I actually met Luis Robles back in 2013 when I was an administrator of La Southmost page while doing a promotional event at the W104 studios with Johnny O. At the particular time I didn’t know much about him, but I could tell that he had a lot of determination that I figured I would see him again later on. I will be the first to admit that while I wasn’t big fan at first, his music has actually grown on me and I actually have found myself through out the day checking out some of his other songs on his soundcloud page. When talking about other recognized artists in the valley rap music, Luis mentions “Alfabeto for sure has gone big, if only he would push it just a bit farther, he’s like knocking at that door to be national, he should just bust in it already and give it everything.” When discussing why people in valley hate seeing other people succeed “It’s a crabs in a barrel environment, people hate to see other’s do better than them… it’s a joke when it comes to us mexicans… they try to bring you down .. till you really make it, then once your successful you have all these haters turned brown nosers saying they always believed in you.” Luis has just finished releasing his 5th and latest album, The Fear of Success. Often at times if you’re on the facebook group page “La Pulga Online” you can find him promoting his work and reality videos. C-Styles happens to be also co-owner of the music label Vocal Line Music with music producer Noe “Kold Ice” Alvarado.
We should support for more local talent and be more open minded, making music is not an easy thing and when someone is trying hard, we should recognize their hard work and effort. Go out there and support Luis at South Padre Island. If you want to contact him, you can reach out to him on his social media accounts below.
