Dancing with the devil.

{:en}Back in 7th grade in Perkins Middle School, I remember a story that a teacher told me once.   I didn’t think too much of this story until just recently as I’ve been researching old urban myths and stories for Halloween.  It’s amazing as I am able to remember this story almost word for word, maybe I just have good memory, but it goes something like this.

In the late 1970’s there was a young girl who got a shiny new dress.  She was very excited because there was a high school dance and everyone was going to be there.  She told her mother if she could go but her mother said “You’re not going to the dance, you’re staying home.”  The girl was upset and sad that her mother refused to let her go, but she was determined to have the best night of her life. She got up from her room and told her mom “I’m going to Lisa’s house, we are going to do homework together since we have a math exam in a few days.”  Her mom believing the lie, let her go.  As her mom turned the other way, she took the dress with her.

She arrived at the dance hall, the only thing the men could do was to stop and look at her, the women also gazed but with a different look, a look of envy and jealousy. Her alluring red dress swept across the dance floor.   She waited to see if anyone would ask her to dance, but nobody did.  She closed her eyes, and started to move to the beat of the music.  All of a sudden, she felt a tap on her shoulder ….

…. She turned around to see who it was, she saw a tall man who was very well dressed, slick black hair and dark piercing eyes.  He pulled her close and whispered in her ear “Tonight, we shall dance” unable to say no to this man, she took his hand and started dancing.

The music was just right,  the live band played the Skaters Waltz by French Composer Emile Waldteufel.   The man took her to the center stage, all eyes were upon them.  She didn’t know how to dance, however it seemed the man was able to bring out the best in her.  Each time the music changed tempo, they did too move in perfect unison.  The people couldn’t believe their eyes, they were astonished to what they were seeing, it seemed as they were floating, she however couldn’t tell however, it seemed as she was in some kind of trance unaware of her surroundings.  The crowd started to panic, the couple began floating a few feet from the floor and appeared to be dancing right in the air.  People started to panic and someone screamed loud “It’s the devil !!!!”  As the people shouted, she finally snapped and came to her senses, she looked down and screamed !!!

She couldn’t believe her eyes, she was floating, and most importantly, she looked at the man’s feet, they were not feet but if not, hooves to that of a goat.  She tried to get away but couldn’t.  The man started spinning her more and more, she became disoriented. Everyone looked on but couldn’t do anything, they were flabbergasted to what was in front of them, Lucifer himself.  A cloud of dust swirled upon the flying couple from underneath, the people couldn’t see anything anymore.  The dust finally settled and the man was gone, the lady on the floor covered in a pool of blood. They looked for the man all over, he just vanished into thin air.  The paramedics came, checked her vitals, but no signs of life.

This story has been passed on through generations and after researching different websites, it appears that this another tale that someone started somewhere in South Texas.  It appears that the Devil has appeared around the same time in different night clubs around Brownsville such as Casablanca, in McAllen at Bocaccio 2000, in San Antonio at Camaroncitos, and some place in Kingsville.  Whatever the case may be, it looks like the Devil likes to dance and leave without taking bow.
