{:en}The remnants of Hurricane Patricia are still lingering throughout parts of Texas and Northern Mexico. Weslaco was one of the cities that was hit the hardest as rain caused several streets to be closed off completely leaving several dozens vehicles submerged entirely underwater. Other cities that took punishment were McAllen and Raymondville but through out the Rio Grande Valley, there was rain pretty much everywhere.

It seemed that we were on the home stretch however, today over 6 inches of rain fell upon the city of Brownsville in a span of 2 hours. With Resacas and drainage ditches already full due to last week’s rainfall, any little rain meant that imminent flooding would occur. The parking lot of Rivera High school was completely submerged as waters were waist high. There is a drainage ditch next to the school and as the rain kept falling, the water just spilled over to parking lot leaving a big mess. Several students had no choice but to abandon their vehicles and find another way of getting home.
La Villita, Southmost
Other parts of town, such as La Villita by the Southmost area, people were seen on small fishing boats moving in and around the area. This area historically has flooded ever since I can remember and several friends of mine that live there had water going into their house. Unfortunately for many people that live in the Southmost area, they do not have flood insurance.

In Matamoros, we all know that even 1 inch of rain floods the city, mostly due to limited resources and clogged drainage. Our neighbors in the south also experienced the same mayhem but on a heavier scale. The picture I found is just one of hundreds out there on social media, if Brownsville thinks they have it bad, Matamoros has it worse. The thing about Matamoros is that there isn’t any resacas except for the one and only laguito which is the only last remaining resaca out there. For whatever reason the city planners 100 years ago decided that they were ugly and covered them up with dirt, maybe if they still had them they may have less flooding than what it is now.

The one thing I do admire though about the mayor in Matamoros, Lety Salazar is that she’s always updating all the city citizens about current conditions whether they are good or bad. She posted today on her facebook account “When mother nature strikes, there’s nothing anyone can do, however we will keep on working day and night until we are able to get things back to normal in our city.” While it is true perhaps nothing can be done, there is nothing more gratifying than seeing the leader of the city demonstrating that she cares for the citizens and is willing to go above and beyond. Where is the mayor of Brownsville? Ever since he got re-elected, nobody has seen him anymore.
Tony Martinez and Erasmo Castro
According to the “blogger” Erasmo Castro aka Brownsville Cheezmeh who resides in Austin, claims the people are to blame for re-electing the mayor who “pillages, rapes, and decimates” the community. He is upset that he didn’t win the election and that somehow if he were the current mayor, he is able to summon the rain clouds away. The funny thing is that Erasmo Castro after losing the election sided with Tony Martinez during the runoff due to a personal vendetta he had with Pat Ahumada. Would it not made sense that he should of just set his differences with Pat Ahumada for the greater good of Brownsville? Unfortunately for the rest of the community, we have to wait four years to get rid of a mayor who never shows up when the time is needed, at least to even say “Hey guys, we are going to get through this”. Working in customer service for many years I can tell you that people will like you even if you can’t fix their problem, as long as you listened to them and showed sympathy to their problem, despite maybe not having a solution.
Many events that were setup for Halloween Eve and Halloween have been cancelled due to the rain. Some notorious events that have been affected are Boo at the Zoo hosted by Glady’s Porter Zoo, Dulceton 2015 hosted by the administrators of La Southmost, The Harvest Fest hosted by the Livingway Family Church and the Halloween Spooktacular Bash by the Brownsville Police Department. The ones most affected are the little kids who planned all year round to collect candy. Hopefully the weather clears up soon and life returns to normal in Brownsville.{:}{:es}Restos del Huracan Patricia todavía quedaron por varias partes de Texas y por el norte de México. Weslaco fue unas de las ciudades mas afectadas por la lluvia ya que varias calles tuvieron que ser cerradas completamente y bastantes carros quedaron en ruina ya que estaban bajo del agua. Otras ciudades que pasaron mal momento fueron las ciudades de McAllen y Raymondville pero al igual todo el valle (Rio Grande) tubo mucho lluvia.

Se hacia como que ya no iba caer mas agua, pero el día de hoy pego mas de 6 pulgadas de agua sobre la ciudad de Brownsville en menos de 2 horas. Con resacas y zanjas de drenaje ya hasta al tope debido a la lluvia de la semana pasada, cual quier agüita que caía significaba inundaciones. El estacionamiento de una de las preparatorias de Brownsville, la Rivera quedo completamente inundado y los niveles de agua llegaban hasta las caderas. Hay un zanja de agua enseguida de la escuela y cuando caía mas lluvia, el agua se derramo al estacionamiento dejando todo un desastre. Varios estudiantes no les quedo de otra que abandonar sus carros y encontrar otra manera en irse a la casa.
La Villita, Southmost
Otras partes de la ciudad como en La Villita de la area Southmost, se veían personas en unos botes de pesca dando por las aguas. Esta area históricamente se ha inundado desde que tengo el uso de la razón. Muchos amigos que viven allí, se les metió el agua. Des-afortunadamente, muchas de las personas que viven en la area de la Southmost, no tienen seguro contra las inundaciones.

En Matamoros, todos sabemos que una pulgada de lluvia significa inundación, parte es de pocos recursos y que los drenajes están tapados por basura. Nuestros vecinos al sur tambien pasaron por momentos terribles pero en una escala mas grande. La foto que encontré es una de muchas que circulaban por el internet, si la ciudad de Brownsville que la pasaron mal, pues en Matamoros la pasaron peor. La cosa de Matamoros es que no quedan resacas al excepción del laguito. No se porque los que planearon la ciudad hace 100 años decidieron que las resacas estaban feas y las taparon, alomejor tendrían menos inundaciones si no hacían eso.
Lety Salazar en Matamoros el dia de hoy
La cosa que si admiro de la alcalde de Matamoros, Lety Salazar, es que siempre esta actualizando al todo el pueblo de las cosas que pasan, aunque sean buenas o malas. Publico el dia de hoy en su cuenta del feis, “Sin duda cuando la fuerza de la naturaleza se hace presente no hay poder humano que logre detenerla, sin embargo y a pesar de los más de 7 pulgadas de lluvia que cayeron en #matamoros vamos a seguir trabajando día y noche hasta lograr regresar a la normalidad a nuestra ciudad.” Aunque sea cierto que quizás, no se podrá hacer nada, se agradece cuando un lider de la ciudad toma su tiempo y se le ve que le tiene cariño a los ciudadanos. Hablando del alcalde de Brownsville, ya nadie lo ha visto desde que lo reeligieron de nuevo.

El “bloggero” Brownsville Cheezmeh, cual nombre verdadero Erasmo Castro y radica en la ciudad de Austin, dice que la culpa la tiene la gente, por votar de nuevo a un alcalde que saquea, viola y destruye la comunidad. Aun esta enojado que durante las elecciones la gente no lo apoyo pero sin embargo dice que si el seria alcalde, podrá controlar el clima. La cosa chistosa es que cuando Erasmo pierdo la elección, se unió por clan destino con Tony Martinez ya que tenia un problema personal con Patricio Ahumada. No se porque no pudo dejar su orgullo y arreglar sus diferencias con Pat Ahumada para el bien de Brownsville. Para la comunidad, esto significa 4 años de un alcalde que nunca da la cara cuando se le necesita, ni por lo menos decir “oye vamos a salir de esto”. Trabajando varios años dando servicio al cliente, les puedo decir que aveces la gente con quien hablo a diario no se les puede resolver los problemas, pero mientras los escuches y simpatices con ellos aunque no tengas una solución, con eso tienen.
Muchos eventos que estaban preparado para el fin de Halloween se tubieron que cancelar debido a la lluvia. Eventos como el “Boo at the Zoo” por parte del zoológico de Glady’s Porter fue cancelado, el Dulceton 2015 que iva ser por parte de los administradores de la pagina social de “La Southmost” se cancelo. El “Harvest Fest” por parte de la iglesia Livingway y el “Spooktacular Bash” de la policia de Brownsville tambieron fueron canceladas. Los mas afectados son los pequeñitos que esperaron todo el año para disfrazarse y ir con su cubeta a colectar dulces. Esperemos que el clima mejore y la vida regrese normal en Brownsville y en Matamoros.{:}
